How the numbers are worked out
- Fuel per mile: pence per litre, times 4.54609 litres in a UK gallon, divided by your miles per gallon.
- Fixed cost per mile: monthly fixed costs (lorry and trailer payments, insurance, licences and vehicle excise duty, the HGV levy, telematics, tolls and parking, everything else) divided by all your miles.
- Running cost per mile adds maintenance, tyres and driver pay per mile to fuel.
- Break-even rate is the monthly cost divided by loaded miles, because empty running earns nothing.

Multiply the price per litre by 4.54609 (litres in a UK gallon) and divide by your miles per gallon. At 145p a litre and 9 mpg that is about 73p a mile.
