The federal requirements for this endorsement

49 CFR 383.93(b)(5) lists school buses among the vehicle types requiring an endorsement, and 383.93(c)(5) requires a knowledge test and a skills test. Like Passenger, School bus (S) is one of the three endorsements 383.93(a)(2) allows on a commercial learner's permit.

The curriculum is Appendix D to 49 CFR Part 380 and it is the most distinctive of the five. Its units have almost nothing in common with the freight curricula:

  • Unit D1.1 Danger Zones and Use of Mirrors — the danger zones around a school bus, correct mirror adjustment and usage, the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 at 49 CFR 571.111, the dangers of dart-outs, and teaching students themselves to stay out of the danger zone.
  • Unit D1.2 Loading and Unloading — the laws and procedures for students waiting at a stop and crossing the roadway, ensuring the danger zone is clear and no student is caught in the doorway before moving, proper use of lights, stop arms and crossing gates, the risk of leaving students unattended, and checking the bus for sleeping children and lost items at the end of every route.
  • Unit D1.4 Post-Crash Procedures — fire extinguishers, first aid kits, tending to injured passengers, securing the vehicle, notification, deciding whether to evacuate, and interaction with law enforcement.
  • Unit D1.5 Emergency Exit and Evacuation — including the specific case of students on field and activity trips who ride only occasionally and may not know the procedures.
  • Unit D1.6 Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings — types of crossing, warning signs and devices, and state and local procedures for school buses.
  • Unit D1.7 Student Management — managing behaviour, warning signs of bullying, administering discipline, and specifically avoiding distraction by student behaviour while driving, with railroad crossings and loading called out.

Appendix D requires the training to be conducted in a school bus of the same vehicle group as the applicant intends to drive. No minimum hours, all topics covered, proficiency determined for every behind-the-wheel element, clock hours documented.

Get told when the register changes

Licenses lapse and get renewed constantly: in the current data nearly a quarter of the records in one state register have already expired. We re-check the registers and email a short summary of what moved.

One email when the register data is refreshed or a rule changes. No more than monthly.
