What Class B training has to cover

The federal requirements for this endorsement

49 CFR 383.91(a)(2) defines Group B as any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more), or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) gross vehicle weight rating. The towing allowance is the line between Class B and Class A.

The curriculum is Appendix B to 49 CFR Part 380. Its structure parallels Class A: no minimum hours for theory or behind-the-wheel, all topics must be covered, behind-the-wheel training must be conducted in a vehicle for which a Class B CDL is required, a simulation device cannot be used for that training or to demonstrate proficiency, and the instructor must document proficiency and total clock hours.

The difference from Appendix A is in the detail rather than the shape. Appendix B's Basic Operation section covers coupling and uncoupling only "as applicable", because a straight vehicle may not do it at all, and the backing unit teaches backing and docking the vehicle rather than a combination. The shifting unit stresses fuel economy rather than the combination-vehicle control emphasis in Appendix A.

One consequence of 49 CFR 383.91(c)(2) is worth knowing before choosing which class to train for: a driver who has passed the knowledge and skills tests for Group B may operate any Group C small vehicle, provided they hold the requisite endorsements. And under 383.91(c)(1), a Group A driver may operate Group B and Group C vehicles on the same condition. Training for the higher class therefore carries downward, which is the argument for Class A if the eventual job is uncertain — although Appendix A's upgrade curriculum means going Class B first and upgrading later is not a wasted step either.

Licenses lapse and get renewed constantly: in the current data nearly a quarter of the records in one state register have already expired. We re-check the registers and email a short summary of what moved.
