What Class A training has to cover

The federal requirements for this endorsement

49 CFR 383.91(a)(1) defines Group A as any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more), provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle or vehicles being towed is in excess of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds). That definition, not the job title, is what decides whether a driver needs Class A.

The training itself is set by Appendix A to 49 CFR Part 380, and its opening paragraph contains four rules worth knowing before booking anything:

  • There is no minimum number of hours, for theory or for behind-the-wheel, but the instructor must cover every topic in the curriculum. A school advertising a fixed number of weeks is describing its own programme, not a federal requirement.
  • Behind-the-wheel training must be conducted in a vehicle for which a Class A CDL is required. Training in a straight truck does not satisfy it.
  • A simulator cannot be used to conduct behind-the-wheel training or to demonstrate proficiency, which Appendix A ties back to the definitions of range and public-road training in 380.605.
  • The instructor must determine and document proficiency in every element of the behind-the-wheel curriculum, and must document the total clock hours each trainee spent.

Appendix A also carries an upgrade path the other appendices do not: a Class A applicant who already holds a valid Class B CDL may complete the Theory Instruction Upgrade Curriculum in place of the standard theory curriculum. That is a materially shorter route and it is worth asking a provider whether it offers it.

On content, the Class A theory curriculum runs from Section A1.1 Basic Operation through orientation, control systems and dashboard, pre- and post-trip inspections tied to 49 CFR 392.7 and 396.11, basic control, shifting and operating transmissions, and backing and docking. The backing unit is explicit about teaching "Get Out and Look", evaluating backing and loading facilities, and backing with spotters. The orientation unit has to cover disqualification provisions and fines for non-compliance with Parts 380, 382, 383 and 390 through 399, plus weigh stations, size and weight limits, low clearances and bridge formulas.

Why are some entries missing from the map?
6 of these 26 records give a PO box, a bare route number or a road junction instead of a street address, so no coordinate could be derived for them. They are still listed and searchable by name, city and county, and they are left out of the map and the "nearest to me" results. Placing a PO box at a plausible-looking point would make the map look complete and be wrong.
