Electronic logging devices in Canada

Under the federal hours of service Regulations, a motor carrier must fit each commercial vehicle it operates with an electronic logging device (ELD) that meets the Technical Standard published by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators. Who needs an ELD (s. 77)

Each commercial vehicle a motor carrier operates must have an ELD that meets the Technical Standard, mounted in a fixed position and visible to the driver in the normal driving position. The exceptions are vehicles that are:

Questions

Do rental trucks need an ELD in Canada?
Not if the rental agreement is for no longer than 30 days and is not an extension or renewal of a rental of the same vehicle.
Do older trucks need an ELD in Canada?
Vehicles manufactured before model year 2000 are excepted.
How long does a carrier have to fix a broken ELD?
14 days from learning of the malfunction, or when the driver gets back to the home terminal from a planned trip if that is later.
